Is it safe to visit Romania?

Bucharest-Dracula tour from Bucharest

According to several databases, Romania is a safe country for tourists. The Global Terrorist Database places our country on position 138/163, certifying that no terrorist attacks have occured here. Furthermore, you can walk on our streets without worrying, as muggings almost never happen.

The Global Peace Index (which is based on militarization, society and security, as well as domestic and interest conflict) ranks us on position 22/163. Crime rate is below the average in Eastern Europe.

One problem we are facing is corruption. Watch out for public officials proposing a solution they claim will benefit everyone. If the solution seems shady, it most likely is, so you should refuse and seek legal justification.

Need to Know before going on our Trips to Transylvania

  • Confirm your passport is valid for 6 months from when you think your trip will end. Don’t get stranded.
  • Get comprehensive travel insurance to cover you and your gear. Get insurance that’s right for you and covers your activities in the places you’ll go. Remember, regardless of how healthy and fit you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.
  • Consider your physical and mental health. Get advice from your doctor if you’re unsure.
  • See your doctor or travel clinic 8 weeks before you go for a basic health check
  • Check if your medication is legal and available in the places you’re going. Take enough of your prescribed medicines to last the whole trip. Carry copies of your prescription and a letter from your doctor.
  • Tell your bank you’re travelling and check if your cards will work. Have several payment options.

Driving in Romania

If you intend to wander off on your own and visit Transylvanian highlights outside of the planned itinerary, you might want to get a rental car. It will help you reach your destinations faster and – if you are lucky – you will find a free parking spot in the vicinity and not have to walk too far.

Pay attention at your surroundings while driving in Romania. Many drivers (especially during rush hours, when traffic is very slow) break the law in order to bypass long lines. Illegal maneuvers they might do include crossing red lights, performing U-turns over continuous lines or engaging in risky overtakes.

In order to avoid the previously mentioned parking problems, you should plan ahead and note the location of the nearest parking lot. This way, you have a backup option in case you don’t find a parking spot next to your destination.

Public transportation

If you decided to travel by bus, you should know that it’s the cheapest option. However, buses (and the subway) are usually very crowded and you might encounter pickpockets who attempt to steal your items.

A taxi fare costs more, but this is a more comfortable and intimate means of transportation. However, you might encounter shady drivers. Their tactics include circling you around in order to increase the sum on the meter or negotiating the fare upfront, in which case they will insist to keep the meter off. You should avoid drivers who negotiate the fare because you will end up paying a lot more than the ride is worth.

We recommend ridesharing services such as Uber or Taxify. The amount you need to pay is displayed in the application, so you can’t be scammed by the driver.

Pickpocketing

Beware of pickpockets while in Romania. They operate mostly in crowded places such as the bus, tram or subway. Their favorite tactic is to cut your bag or purse open and sneak away with your belongings. The best way to discourage them is to always keep your items within eyesight. Furthermore, we recommend leaving your most valuable items in the hotel safe when this is possible.

You should avoid people who offer to exchange money on the street. They will most likely trick you into accepting an unfair exchange rate. If you really need to exchange some money, you can go to a bank or to a dedicated exchange house.

Laws

Romania laws require you to always carry photo ID. You should always have your ID Card or Passport on you. We recommend carrying copies around rather than originals.

Airports, military sites and other secure locations do not allow people to take photos on their premises.

You should also know that penalties for drug offences in our country are quite drastic. Depending on the seriousness of the crime, you can face up to 20 years in jail.

Travel Insurance

Our main concern is to make sure your Halloween Short Breaks and Awarded Itineraries take place without incidents. Most of the time, everything goes as planned, but sometimes unexpected situations can cause you serious trouble. Getting a good travel insurance before departing your country is essential as it saves you exactly from this kind of trouble.

For example, you or one of your family members might require medical services. Your healthcare plan most likely does not apply outside your own country, so you won’t receive free care or subsidized costs. This is where the travel insurance comes in and covers the unexpected expense.

How much does food cost in Romania?

Our itineraries in the land of Dracula include at least two meals per day: a dinner and a breakfast. On some days, the schedule is designed to allow free time, which you can use to have lunch on your own account. In this case, it helps knowing the price of food in our country. According to Budget Your Trip, travelers spend about 104 lei / day on food, but this sum is based on three meals per day, so you will end up spending a lot less.

While meal prices in Romania can vary, the average cost of food in Romania is lei104 per day. Based on the spending habits of previous travelers, when dining out an average meal in Romania should cost around lei41 per person. Breakfast prices are usually a little cheaper than lunch or dinner. The price of food in sit-down restaurants in Romania is often higher than fast food prices or street food prices.

Prices for transport in Romania

On our tours, you can enjoy transfers between attractions by car, minibus or coach, depending on the number of travelers. If you decide to explore some of the included cities on your own, you should know a few things about transportation in Romania.

First of all, the price depends on the means of transportation. Buses are cheaper, but you have to wait for them in stations and they are very crowded. Meanwhile, taxis are more expensive, but provide a higher level of privacy. However, some drivers may attempt to artificially increase the sum on the meter or even negotiate the fare upfront (usually making you pay a lot more than the real price).
